How to pick between contact lenses and glasses

Glasses vs contact lenses, which is better? There is no definite answer to this question, as it entirely depends on the person’s needs, lifestyle, and quite frankly, personal choice. We will discuss the pros and cons of each option below:

glasses vs contact lenses

Vision- winner: Contact lens

Contact lens can fit around the curvature of the eyes, providing a wider field of vision and excellent clarity of vision with minimal visual obstructions or distortions.

Compared to contact lens, eye glasses do not cover the entire field of vision, specifically the temporal and peripheral fields.

Sport- winner: Contact lens

This is a no-brainer, the contact lens is the ideal option when it comes to sports, including land-based or aqua sports.

Compared to contact lenses, eyeglasses are more vulnerable to being damaged in contact sports and leading to a potentially catastrophic eye injury.

Cost- winner: Eyeglasses

Despite having a higher initial cost, eyeglasses take the crown for the overall cost category. This is because the cost of purchasing contact lenses can add up quickly depending on the frequency with which you change your contact lenses.

However, it is essential to note that eyeglasses are more expensive to replace if you misplace or damage them. In comparison, losing a pair of contacts do not cost much as they need frequent replacement.

Fashion versatility- winner: Contact lens

This is a controversial and subjective topic, for what it is worth, I personally prefer wearing glasses (as it makes me look smarter than I really am).

However, contact lenses offer more flexibility when it comes to fashion as it is available in various color and pattern. This is especially evident during Halloween or modelling show.

Ease of use- winner: Eyeglasses

Contact lenses often involve a learning curve in the beginning, such as knowing how to look after your lenses, using solutions, and (most scarily) putting them on or removing them before sleeping at night. As for eyeglasses… I believe it is a no-brainer regarding how to put them on.

Comfort- winner: Contact lens

Contact lenses are often technically advanced and offer great comfort during wear. It is generally a good option, except for people with Dry Eye Disease. If you are experiencing dry eyes while wearing contact lenses, please refer to our guide on what to do with dry eyes and contact lens wear.

On the contrary, eyeglasses with heavy frames or high-power lenses can lead to marks over the nose or nasal bridge when worn over an extended period.

Conclusion: Contact lens VS Eyeglasses

Winner: Contact Lens

In a nutshell, contact lens offer better vision, comfort, and versatility when it comes to sport and fashion; while eyeglass is cheaper and easier to use.

My personal tip? Learn to use contact lens while having a backup eyeglasses. Can’t go wrong with having a second option.
